SUBJUNIOR - YEAR 1/2 COMPETITION
Our Year 1/2 Competition is an introduction for children to the game of hockey, incorpoating aspects of the Hockey Australia, Hookin2 Hockey program.
It is played on a ¼ size field and each team has 7 players on the field at a time (no goalkeepers). The games are two halves of 20 minutes with a 5 minute break at half time. No score is kept for the games and there is not a ladder. Players will need a hockey stick, mouthguard and shin pads. Normal running shoes are suitable.
Games are played at Alderbury Field, Perry Lakes from 8.30am.
TEAMS
Teams are typically mixed boys and girls and are formed from children registered to play with YMCC. Where preferred, teams may be school based, or mixed school/YMCC teams. Teams will wear YMCC uniform, or, if preferred a school uniform. Teams must appoint a team coach and manager who will liaise with the J1/2 Coordinator. YMCC can offer assistance in coaching with training plans if required.
Each team will receive at the beginning of the season a bag of balls, bibs and cones. These must be returned to the Year 1/2 Coordinator at the end of the season.
SCHOOL LIAISON/COORDINATORS
Ideally, each school entering a team in the Year 1/2 (or Year 3/4) competition has a school liaison/coordinator.
This role is to help disseminate information, help identify which kids want to be part of a school based team, help the team appoint a coach and manager, assist players to register through the YMCC Hockey Club website, assist parent with queries, and generally liaise with the YMCC subjunior coordinator.
SUBJUNIOR TEAM TRAINING
The default training for YMCC Year 1/2 Teams is Wednesday, 4:00pm at Perry Lakes, (following the group sessions and school holidays). Individual teams, however, are welcome to select a time, day, or location which suits them and start as soon as they like. Typically many of the school based teams will train at their school, before or after the school day, however they are welcome at Perry Lakes too.
In cases where team training time does not suit, children are always welcome to come and train with one of the mixed YMCC teams. Check with the Year 1/2 Year group coordinator for info on when these teams are training.
SEASON
The season will commence Saturday 2nd May 2026 and continue through to Saturday 22nd August, with a break over the Long Weekend and School Holidays.
There will also be an opportunity to play in the Hook-In2-Hockey Carnival. Information regarding this will be provided as made available.
The YMCC Year 1/2 teams have a wind up on Saturday 29th August 2026.
RULES
The Year 1/2 rules are modified to suit the age group and ensure safety. The focus is to help the players develop their hockey and team play skills in a fun and enthusiastic competition. The coach may be on the field (but out of the way of the play) during the game providing support.

In order to assist with the formation of teams for our subjunior competitions, we ask that you register by Sunday 28th March. However, we will still endeavour to fit children into teams where possible up to the end of April.

Fixtures for 2026 will be released once teams have been formed.
